Introduction:

Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health is a 665-bed, acute care teaching hospital and comprehensive regional health center with a regional trauma center located in the Philadelphia suburbs. We offer highly specialized services in cardiac care, cancer care, neurosciences, orthopaedics and maternal/child health.

Job Description:

Full-Time – 7:30am-3:30pm – Weekdays, Monday-Friday with some varied hours to meet department needs.

Responsibilities:

Under supervision of the Manager of Cancer Data, establishes and maintains efficient operation of the Cancer Registry to meet the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry and Commission on Cancer and American College of Surgeons’ reporting requirements; meet the needs of the users of the registry data; and register patients for the duration of their lifetime.

Meets all standards of the Patient Satisfaction Initiative Criteria in order to make Abington – Jefferson Health (AJH) the hospital of choice for patients and employees.

Analyzes, interprets and classifies clinical information from the medical record and Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology records according to state and Commission on Cancer requirements, including, but not limited to, demographic characteristics, disease history, diagnostic procedures, diagnosis, stage, extent of disease, and treatment. Abstracts and enters data into the Cancer Registry database(s) to maintain comprehensive database(s) for both Abington Memorial Hospital and Lansdale Hospital. Abstraction is at a minimum rate of at least 1.0 chart per hour with minimum 95% accuracy.

Identifies cases of reportable conditions by retrieving and referencing appropriate informational/clinical resources to comply with state and Commission on Cancer regulations. Tracks all living patients to obtain information on the quality and length of survival and treatment status to ensure proper follow-up.

Provides staff assistance to the Cancer Evaluation Services (tumor boards) and Cancer Committee to increase the knowledge of the physician members to the Cancer Registry. Provides statistical assistance with patient care evaluations, studies and performance improvement projects. Assists clinicians with cancer-related studies and research projects to comply with Commission on Cancer recommendations. Maintains confidentiality and security of patient data. Keeps abreast of all reporting and data collection requirements to maintain accurate Cancer Registry database(s).

Required Qualifications:

* License, Certification & Registration: CTR or CTR-eligible. If CTR-eligible, CTR is to be acquired within 1 year from the date in position.
* Other Requirements: Knowledge of tumor nomenclature and classification systems (ICD-0, ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM) preferred. In-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, biostatistics, epidemiology and tumor-directed therapeutic modalities. Ability to present statistical data in a meaningful format. Ability to differentiate objective versus subjective findings. Ability to interpret the informational content of the medical record. Ability to work with interruption while maintaining concentration and attention to detail. Professionalism needed to interact with physicians, nursing staff and coworkers.

Preferred Qualifications:

1+ years’ experience in a cancer registry preferred.

Education Qualifications:

CTR, RHIT, RHIA, CCS, experience and training. Associate’s degree required.
